MODU - Air Wave (2015)

Fabric mesh, mini fans, LEDs, wiring

40' x 40' x 20'h

Interactive Consultant for architecture firm MODU, commissioned by The Architecture League of New York.

From architect Phu Hoang's statement:

Air Wave was commissioned... to respond to the theme of “threshold.” Rather than see a threshold as a physical transition, “Air Wave” defined it as the magnitude or intensity that must be exceeded to initiate a particular physical reaction. A threshold is a limit. It can be a physical limit as well as an invisible boundary — like the liminal yet invisible boundaries of sound and air movement. Installed in the vast hall of a former manufacturing facility, the project was suspended in the air and appeared above visitors as an upside-down landscape.

The fabric surface was put into constant movement by an array of suspended fans. The fabric surface both moved with the fans’ air movements and connected the fans together in a synchronous wave. Meanwhile, a cooler microclimate emerged below the surface. The “Air Wave” installation interconnected sound and air movement, in doing so relating the limit — or threshold — of air to the physical boundaries of architecture.
