Headphone (1997)

12" x 10" x 8"
Telephone, acrylic paint

I like the idea of functional household objects unexpectedly emerging as not only a canvas for design, but one that demands interaction of a different sort than it was made for. Here I was playing with the optical trick of a 2D image rendered on a 3D surface that only resolves when seen from a certain angle. Users of the phone usually ended up trying to hold up and rotate the whole object, inevitably getting tangled up in the cords and distracting them from their conversation.

The face referencesJapanese kabuki theater makeup and graphic novel characters, with a hint of supernatural from the fully white eyes.
